For those considering retraining, UK companies offer a wide variety of options. The first thing to think about is your reason for change.

You could be bored, frustrated, want a challenge or to get away from stress. It could be the way you’re treated in your current job – under-valued, being taken advantage of or persecuted. Or the industry you’re in is slowing down or offers little opportunity.

Perhaps you need to earn more money, or find a job that’s restricted to social hours. It could be that you want to find something different that’s more suited to your lifestyle.

So how do you get things moving? The fact that you’re doing some research is a good start, so well done, you’re on your way. And you’re not alone – huge numbers of people in the UK retrain for new careers.

Having decided that retraining is of interest to you, the next thing to look at is what career would you like to get into.

Which of these questions applies to you:

* Once retrained, do you want to earn more money?

* Would you like to use your new skill until you reach retirement?

* Having retrained, do you want to find it easy to get work?

* Should your new skill give you the potential to live and work anywhere in the United Kingdom?

These questions have been asked because they fulfill most of the requirements for a great number of the people we come into contact with. Yet it’s surprising how many don’t think about them until asked. Don’t make the mistake of retraining into an over-subscribed industry.

So in response to the above questions, the most serviceable retraining programme needs to prepare the student for an industry that has skill shortages in demand nationwide, with better than average pay and long term career opportunities up to senior years.

Once you’ve got to grips with your needs and aspirations, you can make a start on zoning in on your perfect working scenario. However, it’s always adviseable to discuss career options with someone who can explain the daily routine of your desired new job.
