Playing God: This film is a preposterous tale of drug addicted ex-surgeon Duchovny employed by gangster Hutton to be the personal crisis medical expert for his shot-up and sliced cronies. The improvised medical therapy is so entirely comical that it upstages the ridiculousness of the tale line. Why this film was ever made is genuinely a case for The X Files. Cast includes David Duchovny, Timothy Hutton, Angelina Jolie, Michael Massee, Peter Stormare, Gary Dourdan, John Hawkes, and Andrew Tieman. (93 minutes, 1997)
Mrs. Dalloway: Redgrave is glowing as the spouse of a British M.P., who on the night of a soiree, thinks back to her youth when she selected between a safe, secure life and a more challenging presence with a gentleman who genuinely loved her. McElhone is a phenomenal match for Redgrave in the flashback scenes. Cast includes Vanessa Redgrave, Natascha McElhone, Rupert Graves, Michael Kitcben, Alan Cox, Lena Headey, Amelia Bulhnore, Sarah Badel, Oliver Ford Davies, Katie Carr, John Sitting, Robert Hardy, Margaret Tyzack, and Phyllis Calvert. (97 minutes, 1998)
Fantomas against Scotland Yard: Sarcastic cliffhanger-type venture story, with Marais as wonderful felon involved in sports orientated adventures. Cast includes Jean Marais, Louis De Funes, Mylene Demongeot, and Henri Serre. (104 minutes, 1966)
Alfredo Alfredo: All too normal Italian comedy in regards to a milque toast who triumphs and weds a seductive female, only to remorse his conquest. Lone interest is recognizing Hoffman’s good work in this uncommon setting (with a dubbed voice!). Cast includes Dustin Hoffman, Stefania Sandrelli, Carla Gravina, Clara Colosimo, Daniele Patella, and Duilio Del Prete. (98 minutes, 1972)
Mrs. Brown, You’ve got a Lovely Daughter: A stupid reprieve for a film, with Herman and his Hermits heading for London to enter their greyhound in a race. In between the anticipation they harmonize “There’s a Sort of Quiet All around the Planet” Cast includes Herman’s Hermits, Stanley Holloway, Mona Washbourne, Sara Caldwell, and Javelin Percival. (100 minutes, 1984)
Red Sun: East meets West in this strange tale of a samurai fighter chasing a priceless Japanese sword stolen from a train crossing the American West. Cast includes Charles Bronson, Ursula Andress, Toshiro Mifune, Alain Delon, and Capucine. (112 minutes, 1972)
Spice World: A fantasy view of a few nights in the lives of the pop phenomenon The Flavor Gals and their presence with road agent Grant. Cameos by Elton John, Bob Hoskins, Bob Geldof, Elvis Costello, The Fantasy Boys, Jonathan Ross, and Jennifer Saunders. Cast includes The Flavor Gals (Mel B, Emma, Mel C, Geri, and Victoria), Richard E. Grant, Roger Moore, George Wendt, Claire Rushbrook, Mark McKinney, Richard O’Brien, Barry Humphries, Jason Flemyng, Naoki Mari, Meat Loaf, Bill Paterson, Jools Holland, Stephen Roast, and Richard Briers. Requiem for a Heavyweight: Solemn account of boxer, Quinn, whose ring occupation is over, pushing him into corruption and degradation. His sleazy supervisor Gleason, understanding teacher Rooney, and Harris as unrealistic city employee are all fine. Cast includes Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, Julie Harris, Nancy Cushman, Madame Spivy, and Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). (100 minutes, 1952)
Thieves like Us: 3 black sheep flee from jail in 1930s south and go on a binge. The youngest (Carradine) falls in love with an easy, ignorant gal (Duvall). In spite of recognizable trappings, Altman digs deeply into period environment and hefty characterizations. This film gets more superior every time you watch it. Cast includes Keith Carradine, Shelley Duvall, John Schuck, Bert Remsen, Louise Fletcher, Ann Latham, and Tom Skerritt. (123 minutes, 1987)
